Pingjiang Rd

Chinese name

平江路

Pingjiang Road is a historic flagstone pedestrian street running alongside the Pingjiang River canal in the old town of Suzhou. Stretching roughly 1.6 kilometres from Ganjiang East Road in the south to near the Humble Administrator's Garden in the north, it preserves the traditional water town pattern where a paved street and a waterway run directly parallel to one another.

Suzhou was known as Pingjiang during the Song Dynasty, and this street's alignment, bridges, and adjoining alleyways match the city layout recorded on the famous 1229 Pingjiang Map stone stele. The buildings lining the canal feature classic Jiangnan architecture, characterized by whitewashed plaster walls, dark grey tiled roofs, wooden lattice windows, and stone landings that descend straight into the water.

Visitors walk along the canal path, cross its historic stone bridges, or take rides on traditional hand-sculled wooden boats. The street is lined with teahouses hosting live performances of Suzhou Pingtan—a traditional storytelling and ballad art accompanied by string instruments—as well as small craft shops, cafes, and quieter residential alleys branching off into the surrounding neighbourhood.
