Rising 468 meters above the Pudong riverfront directly opposite the Bund, the Oriental Pearl Radio and Television Tower has been one of Shanghai's most recognizable landmarks since its completion in 1994. Its distinctive futuristic silhouette features eleven spheres of varying sizes linked by three massive vertical columns, a design influenced by the classical Chinese poetic image of pearls falling onto a jade plate.

The tower offers multiple viewing levels. The main indoor observation hall sits at 263 meters, providing panoramic views across the Huangpu River, the historic buildings of the Bund, and the skyscrapers of Lujiazui. Directly below it at 259 meters is a circular observation deck with a transparent glass floor, allowing visitors to look straight down. A higher viewing deck, the Space Capsule, is located in the small upper sphere at 351 meters, and a revolving restaurant operates between the two main spheres.

At the pedestal of the tower lies the Shanghai History Museum, officially the Shanghai Urban History and Development Museum. The underground exhibition covers the city's transformation from a local trading port through the colonial treaty-port era of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, told through detailed dioramas, life-sized wax figures, vintage vehicles, and reconstructed streetscapes.
