White Horse Cafe, located here in the Hongkou district of Shanghai, carries the history of the tens of thousands of Jewish refugees who fled persecution in Europe and found an open haven in Shanghai during the late nineteen-thirties and World War Two.
In 1939, an Austrian Jewish refugee named Rudolf Mossberg opened the original cafe on this street with his family. They named it after a famous operetta from their homeland to bring a comforting piece of Central European life into what became known as the Shanghai Ghetto.
During those difficult wartime years, the cafe became a vital community hub where refugees gathered to share news, drink coffee, listen to music, and support one another.
The original structure was taken down in 2009 during street widening, but it was faithfully rebuilt across from the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum using historical photographs and records. Today, it preserves the memory of the refuge and daily life of the community that lived here.
