Chinese address

Here on the corner stands the Yuyuan Road Radio Cafe. This compact, multi-story building once served the local neighbourhood as a small newspaper and postal retail outlet. During a recent urban renewal project, the historic structure was redesigned into a shared cultural space and coffee shop, complete with an active live broadcast booth where radio hosts record programmes right behind the large street-facing windows. Inside, the vintage decor, repurposed wooden furniture, and classic radio equipment reflect that broadcasting heritage.
The road in front of us, Yuyuan Road, has a history reaching back over a century. It was laid out in the early twentieth century, starting out as an extra-settlement road built across what was then rural farmland. By the 1920s and 1930s, it developed into one of the city's most fashionable residential avenues, lined with gardens, lanes, and private villas built in diverse European and eclectic styles. Because of that architectural legacy, it is now officially designated as one of Shanghai's protected streets that can never be widened.
