known in Chinese as Shēnyuán, Shanghai Garden is a traditional classical garden nestled right in the heart of the Shanghai Expo Culture Park, built on the grounds that once hosted the 2010 World Expo.
The character Shēn (申) comes from an ancient name for Shanghai, chosen to honor the city's local heritage. Covering five hectares, this entire enclosure was conceived as a classical garden in the Jiangnan style, drawing inspiration directly from the historic landscapes of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The layout follows a deliberate, traditional design plan. Artificial hills rise to the north, open waters settle to the south, and surrounding courtyards and pathways branch off into eastern and western zones. As we walk through, you will see all the signature elements of southern Chinese garden artistry, from stone bridges and covered walkways to waterside pavilions and carefully stacked rockeries.
This is an ideal place to experience a Jiangnan style classical garden if you are short on time to travel outside of Shanghai.
